The Jacksonville Jaguars announce the firing of head coach Doug Marrone after four seasons as head coach.

Marrone’s 2020 Jaguars team finished 1-15, losing 15 straight to secure the number one pick. Unfortunately for Marrone, he won’t get to coach presumptive number one overall pick quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Via Jaguars owner Shad Khan:

“I am committed and determined to deliver winning football to the City of Jacksonville,” Khan said the statement. “Realizing that goal requires a fresh start throughout our football operations, and with that in mind, I spoke this morning with Doug Marrone to express my gratitude for his hard work over the past four seasons as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. I’ll always appreciate Doug’s passion, grit and class, and I’m confident he will enjoy success in the next chapter of his career.

“As the search for our new general manager continues, now the quest begins to find a head coach who shares my ambition for the Jacksonville Jaguars and our fans, whose loyalty and faith are overdue to be rewarded.”

Marrone went 23-43 as Jaguars head coach and 2-1 in the postseason. In the 2017 season, Marrone led the Jaguars to their first playoff appearance since 2007 and all the way to the AFC Championship Game. Three miserable seasons later, the Jaguars went through numerous trades of disgruntled star players, participated in zero playoff games, had numerous NFLPA complaints, and announced the firings of Executive VP Tom Coughlin in 2019, GM David Caldwell during the 2020 campaign, and most recently, head coach Doug Marrone immediately following Week 17.

The Jaguars go to show you that a team can be so close to a Super Bowl run and yet so insanely far away within a season or three late.

We’ll see who the Jags hire to be their next head coach, but expect them to interview and inquire about Eric Bieniemy, Robert Saleh, and even Urban Meyer.

Better days are ahead, Jags fans. Those days might be 4-12 next season, but still better.
