Broadcast Notes: Commentators are Michael Cole and Corey Graves. Former Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn still no where to be found. And WWE is absolutely tasteless for doing angle arrest angle with cops playing off of Jeff Hardy’s real life issues… especially during the week of George Floyd’s tragic death. Leave it to Vince McMahon to remain classy.

Jeff Hardy gets arrested after allegedly running over Elias in a hit and run. Hardy acts intoxicated as he’s dragged by police. Of course, WWE Universal Champion Braun Strowman plays the role of the narc who called the cops. Poor taste, poor execution, poor everything. Thumbs down for McMahon, Bruce Prichard, and the WWE Friday Night SmackDown creative team. Don’t worry, it gets worse at the end of the show.

Matt Hardy and Reby Hardy weren’t thrilled with the angle either and tweeted their disgust. Not cool, WWE.

WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle introduces NXT’s Matt Riddle to the SmackDown brand, Bro. Riddle comes off of a great NXT run and awesome main event cage match to Timothy Thatcher, where he lost clean.

Sheamus wins 10-Man Battle Royal to face Daniel Bryan in the Intercontinental Championship tournament in the main event. Sheamus last eliminated Jet Uso to win. Other WWE superstars in the match: Shorty G aka Chad Gable, Shinsuke Nakamura, Cesaro, King Baron Corbin, Dolph Ziggler, Lince Dorado, Gran Metalik, and Drew Gulak. Gulak was released by WWE a couple of weeks ago and is already back. Nice.

Order of eliminations:

  • King Corbin eliminated Lince Dorado, Gulak, Metalik, and Ziggler
  • Gable eliminated Cesaro and Nakamura
  • Cesaro eliminated Gable after referee was distracted by LOL WWE Logic
  • Sheamus eliminated Jey Uso

“Fast Times” for Otis & Mandy Rose happened. This was wacky and might be overexposing Otis in more ways than one. But hey, Mr. MITB seems to be having a great time.

Shorty G (I hate that name) aka Chad Gable defeated Cesaro. These guys could do a lot more if given the time and push.

WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley and Sasha Banks interrupt Alexa Bliss’ Moment of Bliss show with Nikki Cross, which leads to…

Sasha Banks defeated WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Alexa Bliss in an impromptu match. Banks was unhappy with Bayley accepting the challenge for her, but the champ helped The Boss at the end.

Lacey Evans vs. Sonya Deville went to a double countout.

Daniel Bryan defeated Sheamus via distraction from Jeff Hardy. Yes, Jeff Hardy miraculously recovered, posted bail, and distracted Sheamus for some reason… hinting that Sheamus possibly DRUGGED Hardy to get his spot in the tournament. Daniel Bryan vs. AJ Styles in the IC Title finals – GOOD. Sheamus apparently drugging Hardy in storyline – BAD.

WWE Backlash 2020 takes place Sunday, June 14 at the empty WWE Performance Center in Orlando, FL and airs live on WWE Network.

Current WWE Backlash 2020 Card:

WWE Championship: Drew McIntyre vs. Bobby Lashley (with Montel Vontavious Porter aka MVP). This is Lashley’s first WWE Championship match since his loss to John Cena at Great American Bash on July 22, 2007.

Edge vs. Randy Orton in a straight wrestling match with no gimmicks and stipulations.

WWE is hyping Edge vs. Orton of all matches as potentially the GREATEST MATCH OF ALL TIME. This could certainly be great given who is involved, but GREATEST MATCH EVER? In front of NO FANS who are a key element of wrestling? Strange marketing…

2-on-1 Handicap Match for WWE Universal Championship: Braun Strowman (c) vs. The Miz and John Morrison

WWE Raw Women’s Championship: Asuka (c) vs. Nia Jax
